Key Features of Hypertension Case-Finding Service

The Hypertension Case-Finding service is designed to support individuals with undiagnosed high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to serious conditions like a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease. Early detection can help you take control of your condition before complications arise. This initiative is a key part of the blood pressure screening UK.

This service is a quick and simple way to assess your cardiovascular health. Through this service, Batley Pharmacy offers a free blood pressure check to those eligible for the NHS criteria and a private blood pressure check for those who do not qualify for the NHS criteria. It also includes ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), if needed, to help detect hypertension in adults. It enables our trained professionals to conduct blood pressure screening and provide follow-up monitoring and referrals when needed.

Key points of the NHS Hypertension Case-Finding service:

  • A quick blood pressure check
  • 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) if needed
  • Referrals to the GP if required
  • Record sharing with the primary care team

How Does The Service Work?

The Community Pharmacy Hypertension Case-Finding Service includes

Initial blood pressure check

In a private consultation room, our trained team member will take your blood pressure reading using a clinically validated digital monitor.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)

If your initial blood pressure reading is ≥ 140/90 mmHg, you will be offered ABPM. This involves wearing a lightweight monitor for 24 hours to track your blood pressure during daily activities to rule out hypertension.

  • The ABPM device is fitted
  • Takes automatic readings every 30 minutes
  • Results provided will include a full explanation

Results

The final results will be shared with your GP, who can confirm a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.

Benefits Of ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring)

More Accurate Diagnosis

  • ABPM records your blood pressure at regular intervals over 24 hours, including during sleep.
  • It also helps detect white coat hypertension (elevated BP in a clinical setting) and masked hypertension (normal in the clinic but high outside).

Tracks Blood Pressure Patterns

  • Provides insight into daytime vs nighttime blood pressure variations.

Assess Treatment Effectiveness

  • Shows how well blood pressure medications control BP throughout the day and night.
  • Helps clinicians adjust medication timing and dosage more precisely.

Improves Long-Term Health Outcomes

  • Leads to more accurate management, reducing risks of stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, and other complications.
