Chickenpox Vaccination Dosage Schedule

The chickenpox vaccine (varicella vaccine) is administered in two doses for children younger than 13 years:

  • First dose between 12-15 months
  • Second dose between 4-6 years

For people aged 13 or older and non-immune adults, two doses are recommended, spaced four to eight weeks apart. The vaccine significantly reduces the incidence and severity of the disease.

What does a Chickenpox Rash look like?

It typically starts in a day or two as an itchy rash that usually appears on your face, chest, scalp and back spreading to the rest of your body. In severe cases, it appears in the mouth, eyes or genitals. The rash progresses from raised, itchy bumps (papules) to fluid-filled blisters (vesicles). These rashes eventually form open wounds that crust over into scabs.

How does the Chickenpox vaccine work?

Chickenpox vaccine (varicella vaccine) is a live vaccine. It contains a weakened form of the virus and when introduced, it stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies then provide protection against the chickenpox virus.

Contraindications to Chickenpox Vaccine

Generally mild, but the Chickenpox vaccine can be potentially severe for some. That's why we recommend consulting your General Physician GP before getting the dosage. Conditions include;

  • Pregnancy
  • History of an allergic reaction (e.g anaphylaxis) with a previous dose of varicella vaccine or to a specific component of the vaccine
  • A weakened immune system due to diseases such as HIV or treatments like chemotherapy
